Weekend Breaks In Bath
The term ‘World Heritage Site’ defines Bath as a ‘place of outstanding universal value to the whole of humanity’.
It’s hard to argue that Bath delivers on these fronts. It’s a truly unique and memorable place to visit for a weekend break or perhaps even longer.
Obviously one of the most famous sites to visit is the Roman Ruins and not to mention the baths.
Housing the only hot springs in Britain, they were built around 2,000 years ago by the Romans.
You get a real sense of ethereal affirmation, the spectres of previous generations, outlived and centred on such a beautiful and uncommon structure. It’s a remarkable sight, the perfect combination of natural beauty and man-made architecture.
The baths themselves are not accessible to the public. However if you desire a real Roman Bath experience, the Thermae Bath Spa utilises the hot springs water to provide the public with the opportunity to relax in the roman Baths. It’s a brilliant way to top off the day, and you can even enjoy a meal afterwards in their top restaurant. (See their website for information on ‘twilight’ packages.)
The Botanical Gardens in Victoria park are an excellent place to go for a relaxing walk surrounded by beautiful plant life. This proved to be a real highlight of our trip, as it is beautifully maintained.
The first thing I was told upon being recommended visiting Bath was to catch the train, as the traffic can be a nightmare. Upon arrival there, I understood why. On weekends the traffic gets quite hectic in the town centre, as you might expect, but fortunately many key things to see in the town are within walking distance of the train station.
To start our day out, we attended the walking tour of the city. We met them on the Friday at 7pm at the Bath Abbey Churchyard.
There are a circuit of Tour buses that continuously run around the town, stopping at all the key places, so you’re always in a position to jump aboard and travel to the next landmark.
If you interested in doing something a bit different, or you’re a sporting enthusiast, Bath Rugby club are a professional side in the top tier of English Rugby. The matches vary from approximately £15-£30. Whether you’re already a fan or just a newcomer to the game, you’ll feel welcomed here in a special and friendly atmosphere.
There are many different kinds of shows on offer at the Theatre Royal. The performances here are well produced and very memorable – whether it’s opera, folk singing or Shakespeare.
There are also numerous old fashioned pubs in the town where you can relax at the end of a long day’s exploring, with samples of local ales and hearty meals available at every corner.
For accommodation, there are many high class hotels around the city centre. If you’re after some luxury accommodation, check out the Royal Crescent Hotel which would make a perfect camp for exploring the city. You can enjoy some fine dining in their restaurant, which serves a wide variety of dishes all of an extremely high quality.
Bath is a lovely place to visit for a relaxed weekend away; it’s a truly unique part of the country steeped in history and culture.
