Another issue will be the plugs used in Spain. If you come from the UK then you will need an adapter fsor the plug to fit but the voltage is the same. For people from North and South America the voltage you use is less than that in Spain so you need to get a plug adapter that takes this into account. Adapter that use an in-built transformer are designed for this issue.
It is always nice to have the ability to be able to call you family when you are away. Although many people find the cost a problem. You will find it much easier if you have a mobile phone that is compatible with Spains local telephone network. All this means is that your phone can work with any SIM and uses GSM technology.
